Art/Therapy

I hope you enjoyed the process of coloring the printed mandala designs in class this week.  Mandalas are important to a variety of cultures, faiths and schools of thought...

You can create some interesting mandalas at this site.  If you click on the asterisks, there is more information about the different elements.

Leave a brief but thoughtful COMMENT (100 words or so) on this post answering one or more of these questions:
  • How or why do you think art could be used as therapy?
  • Can you think of other pieces of or types of art that are connected to certain faiths, disciplines or movements?
  • What role does art play in your own life?
  • If you could be any kind of artist, what would you be?  Why?
  • What do your doodles say about your personality?  Check this site or others for reference.
  • Why do you think Adult Coloring Books are so popular right now?  This article has some ideas.

  3. I think art can be used as therapy because it is an activity stimulating enough to occupy all the energy you'd need to worry, yet it is also relaxing enough to not be overwhelming. Focusing on colors and lines takes your focus away from everyday cares. It is also a way to express yourself that doesn't make your throat sore.

In my life art is very soothing. I love coloring, so coloring is probably one of the best ways for me to relieve stress or to just relax.

  5. There are a lot of different versions of art, but I really connect to art through music and theatre. I've grown up with music as a huge part of my life, but I only began theatre my freshman year of high school. Acting has been such a huge part of my life, and I've fallen in love with the process of putting a show together. This form of art has been so important to me that I plan to become a drama teacher and help other kids to gain a love for the art that I love. Music also will be a part of my life. Music tells a story, and it can really touch you emotionally. I love songs that really dig deep into the emotions of the artists and the those who listen to them.

  7. Art can be used as therapy because for some its very relaxing and peaceful. Sometimes it takes you back to when you were a kid with no problems or anything to worry about.

  9. I think art could be used as stress reliever at any time. I think art is a reliever of stress because it takes our mind off of the problems we are facing. When we color we focus on the designs, coloring within the lines, and the patterns that we are trying to create or draw. Art makes us focus on those things, instead of the problems in our lives, and helps us realize that taking a break from our lives every once in a while is okay and needed.

  10. I feel like art is a good stress reliever because it just seems to make people happy and calm down. All the colors just make it so nice and gives people that good feeling. Also it takes us away from our problems that we are dealing with to a place where our minds are happy. Art creates a lot of imagination so there's a lot of places art can take us.

  11. I think art could be therapy because there is no right or wrong when you draw or color something. The idea that what you draw can not be wrong is very relaxing. Same goes for coloring when you can color anything in any color you want. There are more things but that is what comes to mind first for me because i can't draw but i can be a fun way to calm down when you draw a few lines on a paper then run with it for a while to see where it takes you. I'm sure that is the same for other too

  13. I think art can used as therapy due to its relaxation. I find that when I draw I'm generally relaxed, and it tends to put me in a good mood. I draw a lot, I mostly draw creatures, although more recently I learned how to draw humans-kinda. I drew a lot of my own fake Pokemon, and that's most of my drawing. I would want to be a designer for a video game or movie. I would want to do that because it's interesting, and I don't like a lot of the Pokemon from the newer generations.

  14. I beleive that art as a therapy can calm someone who would take their time doing it. The would have some time to calm done and fill some time up. The could use it when they are stressed, angry, and sometimes when they are bored and need something to do.

  15. I think art is used as therapy because of the relaxing feeling it gives you. It doesn't require a lot of energy to draw, paint, or use colored pencils, so anyone can make art. Since we were kids we have enjoyed filling pages with color and art, and as we grow up I think it can be nice to think back to those times while we draw or make any kind or art.

  16. Art can be used as therapy because it helps individuals to express themselves by painting, drawing, photography, etc. Art can help individual show and tell their pain or stories without having to tell anyone because it's all there for display with that it can help them relieve stress and thoughts that has been running around in their head. When painting, coloring, taking pictures they can stop thinking about their problems and focus and their art piece, it's like their secret-get-away.

  17. I think art could be used as therapy because some people find it relaxing. It depends on the person though of which art type they find to be relaxing. Which brings this comment to adult coloring books. I believe that adult coloring books are more popular because adults have found a way to interact with their inner child without being embarrassed because they are coloring in a children's coloring book. And adult coloring books give them something to do, AND it can ease their mind. Coloring can be relaxing, drawing can sometimes be frustrating because putting that image into your mind can be more difficult than we expect. With coloring there are no limits. Pick up a color and color to your hearts desire.

  18. Art can be used as a form of therapy because it's a way to express yourself without using words. Sometimes when people need to relive stress or get something off their chest, it's difficult to verbalize what you're feeling, so art allows a different kind of relief.
In my opinion, coloring is extremely relaxing. I personally own many adult coloring books. Coloring allows me to focus and clear my head. It's a great form of therapy, and if you haven't tried it, I strongly suggest it.

  19. I think art is a common form of therapy because it allows someone to express themselves without having to say anything. You can pour your heart out into your art, wether it's a painting or a poem, it allows you to say whatever you want without judgement.

  20. I think art is such a good form of therapy because it is relaxing and it allows so many options so that you can make things how you want to make them and your own way. It allows you to be you, but on a canvas. I know that coloring is just so relaxing to me because I can color whatever, however I want and I like that feeling of freedom. Finishing a coloring piece might be the best part of all. Seeing that final artwork, going from black and white, to such a colorful piece, it is like the paper came alive and its so much fun and so relaxing.

  21. Art honestly plays a huge roll in my life. I am not the best but not the worst. It is truly something I enjoy. I adore how crazy it makes me but also calms me. It helps me disassociate from my problems, and deal with them without outwardly confronting them. The kind of art I love to do are cartoons. I adore everything about them. A lot of people might not consider cartoons and doodles a form of art but jokes on them, it is.

  23. Art is important because it is a away of expression. It spreads creativity and ideas to all who look at it. I enjoy making my own art because I can say it came from my head. All art is original and different, there is no limit. I also think adult coloring books are a good idea because art also relaxes you. If its not harming anybody I dont see the problem with it.

  24. Art to me, is the most relaxing form of therapy. Ever since I started my sketchbook, I felt my built up emotions had an escape route. Wheter I am sad, angry, or happy, I am able to express it through my art. Meditation maybe seen to others as thinking of nothing and everything quite, but to me meditation is where all you have to do is let your mind wander. Without art I would be a lot more stressed then I am now.
